I Got Teh Moves

Wednesday, May 27th, 2009

Contrary to my unconscious expectations, I do not have classes to go to. My stay here in Asheville really is coming to a close. I’ve known for a long time it was probably coming to this, but it felt like the time would never actually come.

Even though I am kind of antsy (I’ve never lived anywhere for more than a few years at time), I know I’ll miss this place, and I’d like to to say thanks to all my friends who made it a pleasure to live here. Fortunately, unlike many other times in my life, I won’t be moving all that far away.

Oh, and for the record, I hate moving. Just hate it. Naturally, it’s a sauna outside today.

Also for the record, DVDs are heavier than you think.

Is It For Real?

Even with only a week to go, it doesn’t feel like I’m about to graduate. I’ve just been keeping my nose to the academic grindstone for so long that it’s hard to imagine a new semester not starting in a few weeks.

But at the same time, I’m ready for this. I have had enough of school. I’m done. For life. That is, I am too old and tired to be farting around in school finishing general education requirements or going “just to get an education”. (I’ve got a whole rant I will probably go off on in the future on what I think is wrong with the current educational system.) I would be willing to take classes if an employer wanted me to (and paid for it), but I’ve had quite enough of investing great sums of time and money into education with increasingly uncertain payoffs. Maybe I would do something academic far in the future if there was a very specific course of study that I was fascinated with.

You see, I’ve spent almost my entire life in school. K-12. Coming up on 3 (count ‘em, three) associate’s degrees. A (mostly) wasted year at UNCA. I spent half my Air Force enlistment in a classroom of some sort. I’m done.

The last few years have been so boring on a day-to-day basis, consisting mostly of school as they did, that it’s often frustrating and even a little depressing to talk to people about what I’ve been up to.

So, here I am prepared to graduate (again) and enter the worst job market of my lifetime. Fortunately, I would rather work almost anywhere than go back to school.

I Fixed Something Today

Wednesday, March 11th, 2009

I can no longer fathom driving in my car without the ability to listen to radical libertarian podcasts, so when my iPod-to-radio adapter starting crapping out, I was necessarily concerned.

transpod

But gosh darn it, I’m an electronics major, this should be a piece of cake.  Turns out, I correctly diagnosed the problem, took it apart, fixed what was a bad connection to the car’s cigarette lighter, and put it back together again.  Fortunately the problem was in the adapter plug which is a simple DC circuit; had it been in the electronics of the actual transmitter this post would probably be of a more swearing/cursing-my-wasted-life vibe.

So almost two years, countless frustrations, and thousands spent has to date saved me about $70-100.  Now that’s an investment.
